  10. Due to the generosity of a friend, tonite I have an Amiga 5.25" IBM PC format
  11. disk drive attached to my Amiga (I get to roadtest it for a few days).
  12.  
  13. I am still running a version of the Amiga Transformer which I am TOLD is
  14. version 3.7 Beta, however nowhere on the software is that number indicated
  15. and in fact when it loads, the DOS screen says version 1.0... my friend
  16. forgot to bring the disk that came with this drive, so I cannot report
  17. on any "improvements" in the AT which comes packed with the drive.

  19. I can tell you this, however, rumors of software that would NOT run on
  20. the AT are highly exaggerated.

  22. First of all, the new Transformer comes packed with a little white
  23. binder (which I do have near me). Inside the binder is the following

  45. The Amiga Tranformer is not warranted for use with software developed
  46. for computers claimedd or considered to be compatible with the IBM PC.
  47. No claim is made regarding the extent of compatibility of the Version 1.0
  48. Amiga Transformer with the IBM PC, except for use of the above
  49. programs.  See reverse side for complete trademark info.

  51. The typical execution time for dBASE III will be 2-4 times longer on
  52. the Amiga than on the IBM PC. Serial printers are not supported in
  53. this version of the Amiga Transformer.

  57. The book goes on to describe how to physically connect your 5.25" drive,
  58. and how to load, configure, and use the Transformer.  Here is the
  59. STAT page entitled "What the Amiga Transformer Emulates" :

  64. . use of the Amiga serial port as COM1

  69. . 80 col monochrome video mode (sorry folks, no color/sound/graphics yet!)

  73.    and serial and parallel ports.

  75. The manual then goes on to describe "Required Reading" to learn about
  76. PC/MS-DOS, how to hook up drives, printers, modems, (the drive has its
  77. own AC power cord and must be "last in the chain" of drives)..how to
  78. use AT Preferences, how to set up memory (the book mentions that a min.
  79. of 512K is a requirement but the Transformer will recognize addtl
  80. memory addons and allow as much as 640K for PC Dos and applications)

  82. A mention is made of the "attachments menu" and states that the Bell
  83. volume, pitch, mouse, light pen, and joystick will NOT work on this
  84. version of the AT.

  86. Then there comes a keyboard map, pin assignments, and a glossary.

  88. Now here's some good news: I can report to you that the following software
  89. (all trademarkd names from their various publishers) WILL DEFINITELY
  90. run under the 1.0 AT (and wer not listed in the AT book)...
  91.  
  92. Crosstalk XVI 3.3 and 3.5
  93. Sidekick 1.0 (yes, it WORKS!!)
  94. The Norton Utilities (all modules)
  95. IBM Personal Editor
  96. Q-Modem (a very powerful p/d terminal program - shareware status)
  97. SuperKey
  98. Lettrix (a fantastic ram-resident printer/font utility that I'll write
  99. And MANY other small shareware/freeware/public domain programs and
  100. utilities, too numerous to mention here.

  102. It's sort of a hit-or-miss proposition, learning what will and what will
  103. NOT run under the AT. but the List is MUCH longer than C-Amiga will
  104. tell you about (or rather did tell you about).

  106. Unfortunately, although my modem connects thru the various term programs
  107. at 1200 baud, the speed of transmission is no better than 300 baud
  108. under this 1.0 AT. Crosstalk 3.3 is still the fastest of the term
  109. programs I've tried yet, but no way will it run at a full 1200 baud to
  110. the screen.

  112. Wordstar runs, but very very slowly, I'll try the PC Personal Editor later
  113. and hopefully that will give me some text editing capabilities.
  114. By the way, I tried to load original disks of PFS Write and the new
  115. PFS Write/Enhanced (with the spell check ram resident) and neither
  116. would load... these are protected disks.. apparently the 5.25 Amiga drive
  117. had some troubles reading the protection as all I got were
  118. "Error, Retry or Ignore" over and over.

  120. Well, that's enough for now, this should give you some idea of the
  121. capabilities here. I've more software to try out (Dos 3.0, and other utilities) and will have more
  122. details later.
